outgoing interior secretary ken salazar. murder in wine country. three bodies found inside a home and this morning the search now on for their killer. it's a developing story from a home on ross station road outside the town of forrestville up in sonoma county. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec has the latest. >> reporter: investigators have been doing a lot more interviews overnight. they say that they are confident they will be able to catch the murderer soon. in the meantime, this person is still on the loose because they say this was not a murder- suicide. three men were found shot to death inside a bedroom in one of the houses on the back end of this property in forrestville. one of the men's brother found them after he hadn't heard from him in several hours. >> we got called at about 3:15 this afternoon by a female reporting party. she was here with her boyfriend. and the boyfriend, his brother is one of the deceased subjects

inside the residence. so they are the ones that came out and found them. >> reporter: investigators have been talking to that couple as well as some people who live on this property. there are several homes here. while the sheriff's office isn't releasing much of what they've discovered, they say we don't need to be too worried about a murderer on the loose. they say there is no sign of struggle at the shooting scene. none of the three men who were killed live on this property. but one of them is related to someone who has some association with it. now, this morning, we are expecting the coroner to come to the property to collect those bodies. we're also expecting to get more information from investigators. of course, we'll pass that on to you when we get it. live in sonoma county, anne makovec, kpix 5. we are getting a look at the last known image now of a 13-year-old bay area girl who was murdered in fairfield. genelle conway allen last seen thursday afternoon near east tabor avenue and grande circle in fairfield. she was found dead the next morning at allan witt park about three miles away.

she had been strangled. so far, no word on a motive or suspects. police tell us they will have more information later today. and this morning palo alto police are looking for a man who threatened to kidnap an 11- year-old girl, tried to grab her as she rode her bike. here's a sketch of the suspect. the girl told police she was riding on emerson street around 5:30 at night when the man started yelling at her and tried to grab her arm. the girl told investigators that the man yelled, he was going to kidnap her as she sped away on her bike. the man is six feet tall, 140 to 160 pounds with thin light- colored hair. a powerful earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed at least five people in the south pacific. the 8.0 magnitude quake struck off the solomon islands. the tsunami measuring 5 feet high swapped several villages. up to -- swatched several villages. up to 80 homes were damaged. the solomon islands are in an active earthquake zone, the ring of fire. >> that's a big earthquake. let's check with lawrence and get your thoughts on this.

>> you know, i was watching that last night and the first thing i worried about was a tsunami in the bay area. we were fortunate it didn't generate one here. that's a huge one. you haven't even experienced a small earthquake. >> yet. i have been here almost a year. >> hopefully just a small one. around the bay area, we have mostly clear skies toward the coastline. a couple of patches of clouds as you head inland. out over the bay not too bad at this hour. the temperatures colder outside. just because we don't have cloud cover to hold up those temperatures, 34 degrees right now in santa rosa. 38 in san jose. and 38 degrees in concord. high pressure sneaking in here for one last day but you can already see that cold system beginning to develop out of the gulf of alaska. that's going to be dropping in to bring with it a chance of rain as early as tomorrow into the bay area. temperatures today usually in the 50s and low 60s. we'll be close although staying cool in spots only about 58 degrees with some sunshine into san jose. about 56 in san francisco. and about 60 degrees even in

santa rosa. more on that chance of rain and maybe even some snow too liz coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you, lawrence. yes. things are looking pretty good on bay area roads. i got to say. we have been relatively incident-free for this time of the morning than typical by 6:06 a.m. so here is a live look at san jose. this is 101 near mckee where we sent our photographer this morning. and it's actually looking like speeds are better now than they were even earlier in the morning. headlights are moving northbound. elsewhere to our maps westbound 580 is a little slow and go now especially from 205 to north livermore avenue. then closer towards the dublin interchange, it looks okay. you will notice pretty typical stuff approaching 680 in those west and eastbound lanes of 580. elsewhere riding mass transit, vallejo baylink ferry is having some mechanical issues this morning. so they are having to use bus service. but bart systemwide on time. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys.

>> all right, elizabeth. thank you. cowboys and chp officers teamed up on a camel rescue in the east bay. just another day in contra costa county. the vet is set to check out rudy the camel this morning. a minivan bumped into his yesterday on his second romp away from home in concord. drivers coached him to safety and cowboys say the camel usually runs away from homes to graze on other properties. >> i been a cowboy my whole life. that's all i have ever done it worked with cows so this is just like i said on the ranch it's creative ingenuity. whatever you can figure out, whatever is going to work especially here on bailey road. road shut down, we need to get this thing in the trailer. >> well, they got him, all right. took the cowboys more than two hours to round up rudy the camel, get him into the trailer. there he is. and off he goes to get checked out by vet some streets will soon have higher speed limits as the city of san ramon, as a result of a 7-year survey that determined many speed limits were just too slow in town. hope is slightly hyper speed limits will ease traffic

congestion. the new speed limits are set to take effect on february 22. nobody will be pressured into reciting the pledge of allegiance at el cerrito city council meetings. the council opened with a pledge last night and then voted to change its policy for future meetings. they say they will still say the pledge but those who don't want to do so will be invited to observe a moment of silence instead. >> one of the things that came up in our strategic planning for the city was that limitation of the city is that we always -- we do things because that's the way we've always done them. so i want to make sure if we continue to recite the pledge, it's a conscious decision that it's the best way to start our meetings. >> no members of the public spoke against the proposal to make the pledge optional. leaders of the boy scouts of america will vote today on whether or not to keep its ban on gay members. if approved, a new proposal would allow individual scout troops to decide how they want to handle the issue.

some religious leaders criticized the possible change. advocates for gay rights say it's time for the boy scouts to ban discrimination. the military is poised to extend some benefits to same- sex parents of gay servicemembers. u.s. officials say they are likely to include some health and welfare programs as well as access to on-base stores and services. the move comes 16 months after the pentagon repealed its ban on openly gay service. an announcement is expected in the next few days. white house defending a memo from the department of justice authorizing drone attacks against americans working with terrorists overseas. the memo says such actions are legal under three conditions. if the suspect is engaged in planning operations to kill americans, if it's not possible to capture the suspect before an attack, and if the operation follows u.s. laws and war principles. >> someone who takes up arms against the united states in a war against the united states is an enemy and therefore could be targeted accordingly.

>> critics say such an attack would violate the constitutional rights of american terror suspects to a trial by jury. so far there's only one known case of an american targeted with a drone strike, anwar al- awlaki in yemen in 2011. president obama meanwhile set to visit the middle east next month with stops in israel, the west bank and jordan. it would be the first time for the president to visit israel since becoming the president more than four years ago. he is going to meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the white house says the trip will focus on the resumption of talks between israel and palestine. it is 6:10. governor brown messing with texas. his response to a new ad aimed at stealing california business. >> plus, pick your poison. how the type of soda in that mixed drink could be making you more drunk. >> a hawaiian holiday they will never forget. some outrigger canoers get a love tap from a humpback whale all on video coming up.

[ laughter ] >> this is just your usual stuff at 6:15 this morning. they turned them off just after 6:00 and the commute is now starting to back up maybe about a ten-minute wait to get you onto the span jammed towards the en of the parking lot to the first overcrossing. slow through the nimitz freeway. 880 as you pass the oakland coliseum gets more crowded on northbound 880 past the downtown oakland exit. but so far, the real rush really hasn't heated up yet. usually around 8:00 we start to

see that bottleneck in those northbound lanes. elsewhere to our maps, highway 4 this is definitely one of our slow spots. you can see it as you approach lone tree way. once you got past those antioch exits, things improve towards pittsburg-bay point. we have been relatively incident-free so far this morning though. no major accidents, a few ones popping up here and there but they are quickly cleared to the right-hand shoulder. so nothing much blocking languages. through the altamont pass, 21 minutes between 205 and 680 and the dublin interchange. golden gate bridge they did some lane changes a little while ago so headlights are moving southbound towards doyle drive no delay towards san francisco. bart all trains on time including those heading towards downtown san francisco. just a note, vallejo baylink ferry they are running bus service all morning long. the ferries are having some mechanical issues. you may experience delays. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." here's lawrence with a check of your rainy forecast? >> yeah. liz. did you say the metering lights are on?

[ laughter ] folks, we get to see some very interesting weather coming up over the next couple of days. outside right now, we have some mostly clear skies out over the bay couple of clouds showing up in the valleys. cooler start to the day because of that clear sky and well, we are going to see a cool to mild afternoon. but plenty of sunshine today. but showers could make a return as early as tomorrow. they will be cold, too. you have the system out of the gulf of alaska. high pressure bringing us a fairly nice day today but this system going to be dropping in to bring with it some unsettled weather maybe some showers outside not a real strong storm system but we'll definitely feel the change in the temperatures. then a chance of some rain. all right. let's see if we can time it out through the day today. not bad. tonight clouds thicken up. tomorrow morning 6:00 you can see some showers lingering across the bay area. nothing real heavy but scattered showers on and off throughout the day tomorrow and into friday, as well. cold enough thursday night into friday we could so snow down to 2500 feet.

in san jose last night... ' jonathan (taves the suddenly cold sharks are getting days off after three losses in four days. they won their first seven. they have lost three in a row. san jose last night chicago's jonathan got the steal passed the put to patrick kane who buries it to go up 4-3 for chicago of a late empty netter giving the blackhawks the 5-3 victory. chicago remains the only nhl team without a loss in regulation as they beat the sharks last night 5-3. houston there was a problem for warriors last night. palo alto's jeremy lin had a game-high 28 for the rockets. houston put on a clinic behind the arc tying an nba record 14 three-pointers. that was the first half. they finished with 23 to tie the record. lin a career-high 5 of them. final score, not pretty. 140-109. the warriors' winning streak over. next up a tougher opponent, kevin durant and oklahoma. but it is the warriors' three- pointers or one of them that makes our play of the day.

of a stalker's twisted plot. >> from across the bay to around the world, the stories that matter on "eyewitness news this morning." captions by: caption colorado comments@captioncolorado.com >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. good morning, everyone. it's wednesday, february 6. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:30. and some drastic changes are coming to the postal service all in an effort to save billions of dollars. it's slashing saturday delivery this summer. the postmaster general makes it official in less than 30 minutes from now. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in pittsburg with the critics who say it's not enough. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. the postal service says they believe the american public will stand behind the move. they also say it's one the president has endorsed in the past and in fact, president obama has made it part of his reduction -- or deficit reduction package just last year. the financially struggling agency says this move will save

them about $2 billion and the agency says it's lost about $41 billion over the past six years, $16 billion last year alone this as more mailers have turned to email, internet and online banking. the post office says it tried different options to cut costs in the past. it slashed hours of services at half the nation's 26,000 post offices. every and trim the its workforce by 35% but they say there's only so much they could do without congressional approval. congress never passed a reform bill to give them more flexibility to modernize and streamline services. the cuts will take place this summer but experts say these cuts just aren't enough. >> it won't come close to solving the postal service's problems. it's got to look at more fundamental changes in its infrastructure, its compensation costs, retirement obligations and also what it does and who does its business. >> reporter: the cuts apply to first class mail meaning letters and catalogs won't be

carjackings in 2009. garcia-torres might enter pleas in those cases today. it is 6:35 now. emergency crews are trying to reach four remote villages after a deadly earthquake and tsunami in the south pacific northeast of australia off the solomon islands. the quake today generated a small tsunami with waves up to 5 feet. at least five people were killed and more are missing and presumed dead. magnitude 8 quake and tsunami forced evacuations on the western side of santa cruz islands. up to 80 homes and properties have been damaged and i'm sure more to come. >> no kidding. 6:35 right now. you were tracking the earthquake last night. >> the first thing you think about here is boy, is it going to generate a tsunami we'll have to worry about? it didn't. so right now, we are lucky but outside right now we have mostly clear skies out over the bay. looking good so far as we are waking up to a colder morning and that's because we're not having the cloud cover that we had yesterday. so temperatures chilly if you are stepping outside. 34 degrees right now in santa

rosa. 38 in concord. 39 livermore. 45 into san francisco. high pressure looks to give us a decent day although temperatures will be slightly warmer. we'll see a little more sunshine but you have this guy encroaching toward the bay area in the next 24 hours. that means it looks like a chance of some rain coming our way, too. temperatures expected to be in the upper 50s in the south bay today. east bay upper 50s, as well. should be mostly sunny this afternoon. a little cool inside the bay. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. more on the possibility of rain coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> right towards the bay bridge, it's stacking up towards about the foot of the maze probably about 15 minutes now just to get you on the bridge and it looks kind of crowded up the incline, as well. let's go to the maps because we're watching what sounds like now a bad crash near devil's slide there in pacifica. head-on collision. so fire crews, emergency crews, still heading to the scene. so at this point we know at least one direction of highway 1 is blocked. you want to avoid the area. not sure how serious those injuries are right now. but this is not an easy area

up and get him into the trailer. the vet will check him out. san jose police officers association has begun new contract talks now with city officials. the poa says this year, it wants officers' salaries restored to levels before the recent 10% paycuts. union also is calling for three% raises in each of the next two years. just about all the city workers have endured recent pay and pension reductions and several officers have retired or some have left the police department for other cities. an east bay city is changing the way it starts its council meetings. it will no longer be automatic that people recite the pledge of allegiance to open city council meetings in el cerrito. the council last night decided to invite those who did not want to say the pledge to observe a moment of silence instead. a strange landmark in san francisco turns out to have even more peculiar origins. a labyrinth made from rocks off bernal heights boulevard has been puzzling locals for a few years. well, it turns out to be the
